Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture, located north of Lake Biwa, is a treasure trove of Buddhist cultural heritage. Numerous Kannon Bodhisattva statues are spread throughout the area, with nearly as many statues as there are villages, each lovingly preserved by the local people. Many of these statues date back to the Heian period, and in recent years, the area has become known as the “Home of Kannon.” Throughout the seasons, visitors from all over Japan come to pay their respects.
